Long before foreign religions arrived, Africans had their own spiritual systems. They believed in nature, ancestors, and a deep connection with the universe. Their spirituality was based on experience, not blind faith. They saw the sun as life, water as purity, and the earth as a mother. They didn’t need a book to tell them what was sacred. They lived it.

Then came foreign religions. Colonizers told Africans that their beliefs were wrong. That their gods were evil. That they needed saving. The same people who enslaved them, stole their land, and destroyed their cultures claimed to bring “salvation.” But at what cost?

Suddenly, Africans were forced to abandon their traditions. They were told to pray to a foreign god. They were taught to fear their own ancestors. They learned to see themselves as sinners instead of divine beings.

Religions like Christianity and Islam spread across Africa, replacing indigenous beliefs. They preached love but often brought division. They promised peace but fueled wars. They taught morality but justified slavery and colonization.

Today, many Africans worship in ways that were never theirs. They reject their own heritage. They follow rules made by people who once saw them as inferior. They pray to a god who was used to oppress them.

It’s time to reflect. To ask: Who were we before all this? What did our ancestors know that we have forgotten? Can we reclaim our spirituality without rejecting others?

African spirituality was never about control. It was about balance, respect, and harmony with nature. The future lies in rediscovering these truths. It’s not about rejecting foreign religions—it’s about knowing who we truly are.

Let’s remember where we came from.
